Ski Repair with Recycled Materials

The guide outlines a process for repairing ski bases using recycled materials. It suggests preparing the ski base by removing any chips and cleaning the area. Then, it advises gathering and shredding materials, such as extruded PE, to fill the damaged area. The shredded PE is melted and injected into the hole, then allowed to cool before excess material is removed and the edges are sealed. Finally, the ski is waxed to complete the repair process. You need: - carpet knife or a razor blade - cleaning benzine - conventional ski repair stick - ski base file - Injection - waxing skis equipment

1

Prepare the Ski Base

Before melting can begin, the ski needs to be prepared. Any chips around the hole must be removed with a carpet knife or a razor blade. Then, the hole can be cleaned with cleaning benzine.

2

Gather and Shred Material

Next, the material needs to be gathered and shredded. For a touring ski that doesn’t need high-performance requirements, extruded PE is sufficient. Extruded PE is easy to find and is often used for plastic bottle caps, for example. Approximately 20g of caps were shredded for the hole in the ski base.

3

Fill and Seal

The shredded PE is melted in the injection machine. A temperature of approximately 240°C to a maximum of 250°C should be set to achieve a low viscosity of the melted PE. This allows the PE to exhibit good flow properties and completely fill the hole. Before filling the hole, run a hot air gun briefly over the hole. But be careful, only warm the ski base with the hot air gun, do not melt it! Heating the hole helps the ski base bond better with the filling. After filling the hole, let the filling cool for approximately 15 minutes. Then, carefully remove the excess PE with a carpet knife or a razor blade. Seal the edges of the filling with a conventional ski repair stick to ensure that the recycled PE filling is fully bonded to the ski base. Finally, gently sand the surface of the filling with fine sandpaper or a ski base file.

4

Wax the Base

In the final step, wax the ski. You can use the following tutorial for this. There are some tutorials on waxing skis on YouTube. I recommend this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzvCtda5Ohk
